INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - Just a block away from the JW Marriott and across from the NCAA headquarters sits a 6,000 square foot vegetable garden, in White River State Park
"It's fun because people don't expect to see a vegetable garden right here," says Laura Henderson. "This is our fourth summer being in this spot, and so there are people who come back every year."
Henderson is a yoga instructor by trade, but is now the Executive Director of Growing Places Indy, a group of urban farmers who live by the creed grow well, eat well, live well, be well.
She loves it when anyone starts asking about the garden.
"People will ask, 'What you doing?' We say we are growing vegetables, and they say 'I don't see any vegetables here.'
So you can take them, when the tomatoes are on the vine, pull the leaves aside and then they see that, 'oh my gosh, veggies don't come from plastic wrappers in the grocery store they come from plants.'"
The vegetables grown by Growing Places Indy are not touched by herbicides or chemicals.
In fact they are so good, she sells them to people who sign up for a subscription. Local restaurants, like Patachou, H20 Sushi and Recess purchase them as well.
"The produce is being sold, to support the organization, and the work that we do."
In cool weather, Growing Places Indy supports a Winter Farmer's Market.
The people who work here believe in the concept of slow food. It is about sustainability, growing and eating locally grown food.
And sharing that knowledge, with others.
"They're getting first hand experiences of the relationships and the incredible taste and the benefits of eating really fresh, nutrient dense food that's grown locally, so we're supporting our community and economy together."
Growing Places Indy is a not-for-profit organization, with two other urban farms on Indianapolis' east side. They offer classes and apprenticeships for those who want to learn more about urban agriculture. They do accept Food Stamps for those families who want to purchase their vegetables.
9 P.M. UPDATE: The winter storm warnings have been canceled and most snow is coming to an end. The colder temperatures were starting to move into central Indiana.
