Go to any newsroom in America and you’ll find two types of people: those who knew they wanted to work in news and those who didn’t. I definitely didn’t! At the time, I was a Theater major at Florida State University entering the last 12 months of my college career. I happened to take a class through the School of Communication called “TV Interviewing and Hosting,” and in one class session, everything changed. I altered my major and my career path and scored the position of “Host” for MTV’s pilot show “College Remixed” – a News show focusing on issues facing college students. The news bug had officially bitten me and I was hooked.
After college, I was fortunate to start my career at WPDE in my hometown of Myrtle Beach, SC. I reported there for less than a year when I was promoted to Morning Anchor, and was subsequently named one of the “Top 5 Most Successful People Under 30” by Coastal Business Life Magazine. Of course, where there are southern beaches, there are hurricanes, and I reported live on the beach for two of them through torrential wind and rain – each time for 13 hours straight.
I went from one weather extreme to the other when I moved north to work as the Morning Anchor at WTOL in Toledo, OH. At the time, I didn’t own anything heavier than a rain coat, but I learned quickly that only a collection of colorful coats would do. It was the countless hours of Severe Winter Weather coverage that earned the shows I anchored an Edward R. Murrow Award for “Best Newscast” and three Emmy Awards for “Best Morning Newscast.”
And now my journey has led me here to WISH-TV in Indianapolis where I’m excited to go to every festival, every home game and take every opportunity to witness the famed Hoosier hospitality. Send me an email at Lauren.Lowrey@wishtv.com if you have story ideas, restaurant suggestions, or great places to Ballroom Dance (I used to teach and compete in Tango, Cha-Cha and Waltz – but that’s a story for another time).
