INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - Tens of thousands of people converged on downtown Indianapolis Saturday morning to take part in Race For the Cure. It's a run that's become a symbol in the fight against breast cancer.

Breast cancer survivors were surrounded by those who have been on the same journey. For some, it sparked a feeling beyond words.

"Really can't explain it. It's nice," breast cancer survivor Audrey Bowman said.

There were as many stories as there were survivors. Stories of how and when they learned they had breast cancer.

Susan Gillim learned she would have to have a mastectomy on 9/11, "It probably would have been more devastating. But on that day I knew there were a lot of people who were losing a lot more than I was and so it put it in perspective for me."

Survivors like Gillim took part in what was called the Pink Parade before the race began.

"Only breast cancer survivors walk in the pink parade. It's a celebration of being here and it's a celebration of surviving breast cancer," Gillim said.

Then it was time for the race itself. More than 40,000 people took part.

This was the 18th year for this race. Most of the money it raises will go for screenings and follow-up care for underserved women. The rest will go for education and research.

But the benefits from this event are far from simply financial. Those taking part feel a huge sense of camaraderie after surviving a diagnosis they never dreamed they'd hear.

"Never thought I'd be wearing a pink hat or on this side of things by any means," breast cancer survivor Sherri Miller said.

It was a day anyone wearing anything pink could feel a little extra pride and a little extra support.

Race For The Cure is sponsored by the Susan G. Komen Foundation.
