Embracing Aging Hair

As we age, our hair ages with us, causing our hair to turn gray, silver or white. It is nature’s way of softening our expression lines and facial features. Just because we are aging along with our hair doesn’t mean we can’t have style. Some people choose to wear their hair gray while others choose coloring it.

A couple causes of gray hair are hereditary and stress. If your parents had gray hair at an early age then you most likely will as well.

Each hair follicle has a certain amount of pigment cells. These pigment cells produce melanin, which gives our hair its color.

As we age, those pigment cells gradually die leaving less melanin in the hair making the hair more transparent (gray, silver or white).
Gray hair shows more noticeably on darker hair and blends more on lighter hair. You may notice a gray hair or two one day but it could take up to 10 years to turn completely gray.

The most common mistake a client can make is wanting their old hair color they had when they were younger without adding softer tones around the face. Lighter tones will lift and open the face while darker tones close in. It is very important to choose the correct color placement.

Our model today is Beth, who is a student at PJ’s. Beth’s look today is a dark chocolate brown with raspberry lowlights and medium caramel highlights. Notice that she has the caramel color around her face to soften her facial features. These colors are going to look great for fall.

Trendsetting is very easy to do. Just talk to your stylist and collect pictures to inform them of what your interest are.

Let’s look at a few celebrities:

  • Paula Dean has beautiful gray hair. Sometimes gray hair will develop unwanted yellow tones. You can remove those yellow tones with our Malibu treatment and use a clear gloss for incredible shine.
  • Jamie Lee Curtis sports a short pixie style crop cut with natural soft tones
  • Diane Sawyer has a medium blonde base with a lighter blonde and darker blonde woven throughout. Notice how the lighter has a youthful appearance.
  • Reba McIntyre has bronze tones throughout her copper red base.
  • Oprah Winfrey has a dark brown base with honey and mahogany highlights above the ears.

All these looks can be achieved at PJ’s in our student salon. All work is supervised by licensed instructors at all locations throughout Indiana and Kentucky. And remember, that aging doesn’t mean we can’t have style.
