Just remember to drink plenty of liquids like water, slow down and think of the others in your group, especially young children and older adults. Indianapolis EMS recommends taking preventive steps prior to spending multiple hours at an outdoor event.
• Regardless of how active you are, increase your intake of nonalcoholic and non-caffeinated fluids. By not waiting until you are thirsty to drink, you will decrease your chances of becoming dehydrated, fatigued or overheated.
• Alcoholic beverages and sugary drinks can actually cause the body to lose more fluids, so limit the intake of these items.
• Wear light-colored, loose-fitting and lightweight clothing to help keep your body safe and cool from the sun, and be sure to bring plenty of sunscreen.
• To escape from the sun, try to occasionally visit an air conditioned buildings, a cooling station, or just find some shade.
• The MESH/IEMS cooling tent will be located outside the Indianapolis Motor Speedway near the Coke Lot.
• Be aware of those at greater risk for overexertion or heat-related illnesses. Some of these groups include young children, adults over 65 years old and those with existing medical conditions.
