Low iron is the most common nutrient deficiency in the United States and a leading cause of anemia. Signs of low iron include extreme fatigue, weakness, shortness of breath, dizziness, irritability and headache. Your may experience problems with maintaining body temperature, causing your hands and feet to feel cold. Pale skin, brittle nails, an inflamed or sore tongue and rapid heartbeat are other signs of low iron. Restless legs syndrome, a condition that causes an uncontrollable urge to move the legs, occurs in some people with low iron. Poor appetite and pica, an urge to eat unusual non-food substances are other signs of low iron.

Fortunately, iron deficiency is usually treatable by dietary changes, supplements or a combination. If you are diagnosed with low iron, talk to your doctor or nutritionist about food recommendations that can help elevate your blood iron levels.
 

Diet Additions. 

Blackstrap molasses is a rich source of the type of iron found in plant foods. One tbsp. of blackstrap molasses provides 3.5 mg of iron. This represents over 19 percent of the daily recommended amount of iron for adult women, and over 43 percent of the daily recommended amount for adult men. Each serving of blackstrap molasses contains 47 calories.

Other iron rich foods, Figs, Broccoli, raisins,
Plant-based proteins, such as nuts, seeds and beans all offer significant amounts of iron. According to the NIH, per serving black beans contain 3.6mg of iron, kidney beans contain 5.2mg of iron and boiled soybeans contain 8.8mg of iron.
