Dr. Roger Spahr, The Spahr Center, answers the question: What is a Serving?

Often when discussion diets we say “6-7 or 8-9” servings per day of fruits and vegetables.

So is that 5 veggies and 2 fruits?

Also, what counts as a serving?

Typically ½ cup is the amount used with lettuce being 1 cup.

Here are some typical serving sizes for fruits and vegetables:

Fruits

  • one banana
  • six strawberries
  • two plums
  • fifteen grapes
  • one apple
  • one peach
  • one-half cup of orange or other fruit juice

Vegetables

  • Five broccoli florets
  • ten baby carrots
  • one Roma tomato
  • 3/4 cup tomato juice
  • 3/4 cup vegetable juice
  • half of a baked sweet potato
  • one ear of corn
  • four slices of an onion
