Seven-time Indianapolis 500 starter and recognized leader in motorsports Lyn St. James will make her racing return at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in the inaugural Grand-Am Rolex Series race July 27. The 1992 Indy 500 Rookie of the Year and two-time winner of the Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona will be competing in the SpeedSource Mazda RX-8 GT entry. The Grand-Am Rolex Series is part of Kroger Super Weekend July 26-29.
The door opened for St. James when Indianapolis Motor Speedway representatives were visiting the Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona this year to get to know Grand-Am officials and teams.
A lot of elements had to come together for the venture. Mazda stepped up to provide the car and its championship-winning SpeedSource team has agreed to prepare the car. St. James, who is known for her efforts to provide opportunities for women, will be joined by teammate Indycar driver Ana Beatriz for the 3-hour race at Indy. The duo is among only eight women who have raced in the Indianapolis 500.
The team is still working to secure additional sponsorships and partners and may yet add a third driver.
