Mayim Bialik may be best known for her role as a neurobiologist on the TV show The Big Bang Theory, but her fans may not realize she also holds a Ph.D. in neuroscience in real life. Mayim has said she fell in love with science during her role on the TV show Blossom. During this time, one of her tutors showed her creative ways to learn about science and gave her the confidence to pursue an education in the field.
Mayim is passionate about motivating young women to think like innovators and become inspired by their own potential education and career opportunities in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). In a recent interview Mayim said she sees the importance of STEM education for all students, but especially for young girls who may think such “boy” subjects are not for them. Mayim has said she likes the way Big Bang Theory portrays scientists not just as stereotypical characters but as entertaining people who actually have lives outside of their work.
Mayim has teamed up with DeVry University for its National HerWorld® Month initiative, aimed at empowering and educating young women about the demand for STEM careers and inspiring them to achieve their college and career goals within those fields. On Thursday, March 7th, Mayim Bialik will be available to discuss the program, and how it’s aligned with the nation’s need to prepare the next generation of America’s employees for the eight million jobs that will be available in STEM-related fields by 2018.
