The tragic drowning at a local child care ministry of a 1-year-old child earlier this week is heightening awareness of the need for quality care for all children.
Accidents are the leading cause of death for children under age 18. Many child care accidents are avoidable.
And parents expect that when they go to work, the child care provider they pay will take necessary precautions to keep their children safe. Most do. In fact, most child care providers are required to follow guidelines related to group size limitations, child-to-adult ratios, and other standards to ensure that very young children are constantly supervised .
Early child expert, Dr. Ted Maple and Shalonda Murray, director of Auntie Mame’s Child Development Center, a United Way agency have worked with to voluntarily improve the safety and quality of their programs.
