Your Pets and Winter Weather

We've had a nice long run of tolerable weather, but winter conditions can hit at a moment's notice. Brad Phifer from Bark Tutor shows us what we need to know, what we need to do, and what we need to have to get them safely through the cold, snowy season.

To keep your pets healthy and safe during the winter, here are a few tips:

  1. How active is your pet outside. If they become inactive, that is probably a sign they are getting too cold and need to be brought back inside.
  2. If the snow gets deep or if you have a small breed dog, you may need to shovel a path for your pet.
  3. At home use pet friendly snow melt to protect their paws.  After a walk outside in public areas, be sure to wipe down the pads of your pets paws with a damp towel to remove any remaining salt.
  4. If you have an animal that lives primarily outside and is an outside breed, make sure you have a proper shelter.
  5. Coats and sweaters may be good short haired dogs but they can get wet and hold water. Look for coats that repel the water.
