Have you started making your Holiday Gift List? This year there are a dizzying array of tech gizmos and gadgets competing for your holiday funds and it’s difficult to find just the perfect gift. Over the last few months I have been testing out hundreds of potential gifts and I finally narrowed it down to fifteen of the best gadgets for 2011. Whether you are looking for something practical, the coolest toys, or just something fun and whimsical you can’t go wrong with any of these gadgets!

Overall Best Gadget for 2011
CEIVA Connected Digital Photo Frames
www.ceiva.com ($127.99 - $147.99 MSRP)
Digital picture frames have been around for a while now, but when you give them as a gift not only do you have to explain how to operate them, you have to figure out how to easily get new pictures to the recipient. CEIVA solves that problem with their connected photo frames. In my testing I was able to easily walk through the setup and have the frame operational, with pictures, in less than 10 minutes. Once the frames are connected you can begin loading pictures using the CEIVA website, from your smart phone, or from Facebook. Impressively, CEIVA realized that some of the target audience for these frames would not have wi-fi or ethernet and also built in the ability to update the frames via phone line. The frames are the perfect gift for families and easily walk away with this year’s overall best gadget award.
Best Practical Gift:
Jaybird Freedom Bluetooth Wireless Headphones
www.jaybirdgear.com ($99.00 MSRP)
When one wants to listen to music while being active wireless Bluetooth headphones have held promise; put a MP3 player in your pocket and work away with no wires to catch. However Bluetooth headphones have been hit or miss when it comes to quality and fit as the amount of space normally required to contain the Bluetooth innards is normally directly related to the lack of comfort while wearing them. The Jaybird Freedom gets rid of the tight and uncomfortable headbands found on other wireless headphones while still featuring sound quality that rivals wired headphones.

Best Gadget:
SuperTooth Disco Bluetooth Music Player
www.supertooth.com ($149.00 MSRP)
Wireless music players are rapidly becoming the norm in portable audio but the SuperTooth Disco Bluetooth Music Player peaked my interest as a potential game changer. This rechargeable player features a high power 28-watt amplifier that streams your music from any Bluetooth connected device. The sound from my demo unit was incredibly intense for such a compact device and the bass boost literally shook the windows. Incredibly, my testing confirmed SuperTooth’s claims of 3-4 hours of high volume music and up to 10 hours of low to moderate volume before requiring a recharge.

Best Toy:
Swann Military Thunder R/C Helicopter
www.swann.com ($69.99 MSRP)
Easily the most popular gadget to come into my office, I had to fight off my coworkers so I would have time to ‘test’ the helicopter myself. The Swann Military Thunder Remote Control Helicopter is small, lightweight, and charges in minutes off a USB port or with the remote control. With flight time up to 8 minutes per charge, it is the perfect short-term diversion and a great gift for anyone above the age of 14.

It’s hard to pick just five (or fifteen) gadgets from the thousands available. If you feel I’ve missed something or would like more information on this year’s crop of gadget and technology related gifts, make sure you drop me a comment on the Taming Technology Facebook page!
Next week, As we inch closer to the holiday season and Black Friday, I’ll be looking at apps and websites that will help you complete your gift list without draining your bank account.
