If you have something melted on the bottom of your iron, take a piece of foil about twice the size of the bottom of your iron, lay it flat and sprinkle salt on it. Set the iron on a warm setting and slowly run the iron over the surface.  The salt will act as a scrubber to clean off the gunk on the bottom.
