WNDY-DT, channel 23, transmits from its tower location in Strawtown. (see map on left) That's a couple of miles north of Noblesville. Viewers trying to receive WNDY may need to aim their antennas just a little differently to pick up this signal, while still also picking up the signal from the "antenna farm" in NW Indianapolis where most of the television towers are located.
WNDY-DT has been on the air from that same location since October of 2002, and it will stay at that same location after the digital transition date. WNDY-DT transmits over TV channel 32, but once your receiver picks it up, you'll see that we include a little snippet of digital information that tells your set that this really is WNDY 23.1.
Coverage area for WNDY-DT is the same as for the analog version, so if you’re receiving a nice clear over-the-air picture on analog WNDY-TV, you'll be in great shape for receiving WNDY digital. Most viewers have the best success letting their receivers (or converter boxes) find the channels by doing a "scan" or "channel search." This doesn't always work perfectly, though, so you may want to try to tune manually to channel 32 to see if that helps. Even more specifically, you could try to tune channel 32-3 or 32.3, depending on whether your remote control uses dashes or decimal points.
One thing that could cause confusion for some is that, after February 17, 2008, when WNDY-TV analog goes off the air, that same TV channel 23 will then be used by WIPB-TV from Muncie, for its digital broadcasts. It will show up as channel 49-1 (and more), because WIPB in Muncie has its analog broadcasts on TV channel 49. Those broadcasts will be sent from WIPB’s tower site in Muncie, so this won't affect or confuse the majority of people, but folks NE of Indianapolis may be able to receive those signals.
Once the channel scanning and searching is complete, all this will settle down, but there may be a day or two of questions, as people have to re-find their favorite stations.
