Purdue WL Questions & Answers:

What is Purdue doing to try to make college more affordable?

We area in the midst of a $304 million Access and Success campaign to raise money for scholarships and programs to help students succeed. The money raised will be added to our endowment to support additional need based scholarships for both low and middle income students, as well as, merit scholarships to help high achievers.

Considering the Brain Drain, why should Indiana schools continue to educate so many out-of-state or international students who likely will leave the state after getting their degrees?

Non-residents not only add to the economy of Indiana, they actually support the cost of education for our Hoosier students. Non-residents are estimated to bring in $290 million at West Lafayette for the current school year compared to $178 million for Indiana students.

Not all non-residents leave Indiana after graduation. One very successful program, Purdue's Interns for Indiana is encouraging students to make careers in our state. In this program, students work for Indiana companies as third and fourth year students. This program is only 3 years old, but a survey of graduates shows that, overall, 66% of these interns stay in Indiana. Nearly 40% of the non-resident graduates stay in Indiana, including those who go to graduate school. This is not a drain, but a brain gain, for our state.
