INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - Unemployment dropped 0.1 percent to 10.1 percent in September the Indiana Department of Workforce announced Friday.

The national unemployment rate of 9.6 percent was unchanged over the same period of time.

Private sector jobs dropped in September despite the decrease in the number of Hoosiers seeking unemployment benefits.

"Any drop in the unemployment rate is welcome news," said Mark W. Everson, Commissioner of the Indiana Department of Workforce Development. "On a year-to-date basis, Indiana continues to be a leader in private sector job growth."

Illinois has the lowest unemployment numbers out of neighboring states at 9.9 percent. Ohio reported unemployment was at 10.0 percent and Kentucky weighs in at 10.1 percent. Michigan has the highest unemployment rate at 13.0 percent.
