INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - The Pacers are once again out of the playoffs, but the team remains positive. President Larry Bird believes the future looks bright for the blue and gold.

"Couldn't be more proud of a group of guys of how they hung together," said Bird.

Bird cleaned house a year ago and now it looks like the Pacers are back on track. Seven new guys made up this season's team. A team that Danny Granger became an all-star for the first time, rookies Brandon Rush and Roy Hibbert developed into solid starters, and a team that finished with a winning record after the all-star break.

"Obviously, change the culture that was the first goal and play the style of ball that our fans will enjoy and really just keep our players out of trouble," Bird said.

Bird said there is still a lot of work to be done in order for the team to reach its ultimate goal.

"Our goal is always to reach the playoffs," said Bird.

And the only way to a post season is with solid defense. The area Bird said his team needs the most improvement.

"If we are better on the defensive end we have are going to win more games that's where the games are won when you need a stop have to be able to get it and we haven't been able to do that," said Bird.

As far as Bird is concerned that's his only focus, putting the Pacers back on top.

Bird said, "If I do stay on it will be a hand shake deal with Herbie and if things don't go right he can just let me go. I'm not here to sign another long term deal."
