CARMEL, Ind (WISH) - Corvettes are the priciest cars Chevrolet makes and can retail for a base price of nearly $50,000. The Penske Chevrolet dealership in Carmel is dealing with losing two of them and a brand new SUV to theft.
The thieves passed up on all of the new and used cars out in the Penske lot and instead stole cars parked inside the dealership. The thieves stole a blue 2008 Corvette, a black 2006 Corvette scheduled for service and a dealer-owned silver 2008 Tahoe.
Police said the thefts occurred sometime between Saturday night and Monday morning.
Carmel Police have investigated 40 vehicle thefts this year, 15 of them from dealerships.
"This is the first time we've seen multiple vehicles taken in one incident," said Carmel Police Department Lieutenant Jeff Horner.
A Penske spokesperson said that they took all precautions to safeguard customer vehicles. He said that all three vehicles were locked inside the dealership when they were stolen.
"There's no forced entry to the building so we are not sure how they gained access to the building. But all three vehicles were inside and were taken from the service bay area," said Lt. Horner.
One year ago, Carmel police investigated one of their own for allegedly stealing a 1995 Lexus from the same dealership. Michael Flynn was working as a security guard at Penske Chevrolet when police said he stole the car.
A Penske Chevrolet spokesperson said, in this case, the company is cooperating with police and conducting their own internal investigation.
The general manager at the dealership said he doesn't have surveillance video of the theft. Carmel police said it is early in their investigation and they should know more about the theft soon.
