INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - NCAA president and former Indiana University President Myles
Brand made the announcement over the weekend that he has pancreatic
cancer.
In a written statement, Brand said he is undergoing chemotherapy
but, "the long-term prognosis does not look good."
Clarian oncologist Pablo Bedano said only about 20 percent of
patients are candidates for surgery. He said chemotherapy improves
the quality of life for patients without huge side effects, but it
does not cure the cancer.
"The median survival time, that means most people that have had
advanced pancreatic cancer, live about 8-12 months," said Dr.
Bedano.
Dr. Bedano said there is a lot of pancreatic cancer research
under way and he is hopeful for an eventual breakthrough. But he
said it is one of the most difficult cancers to tackle.
