CARMEL, Ind. - A Carmel family is keeping a close watch on the situation in
India. They have a brother living there and a daughter who was
visiting there during the terrorist attacks.
Neema Kulkarni's brother, Dhananjaya Chandrachud, a sitting
judge on the Mumbai high court, lives not far from the terror
attacks.
"From his balcony and from his living room they could see
everything up in flames. They could hear the bombs going, they
could hear all the noise, the guns. So, they are awfully close,"
said Neema Kulkarni.
Chandrachud is safe. So is the Kulkarni's daughter, Charu
Chawla. Chawla was visiting Mumbai this week and could have been
inside the Taj Mahal Hotel where one attack was based.
"They were supposed to be at the Taj, staying over there during
their stay. But fortunately for them, they decided against it and
came and decided to stay with my brother," said Kulkarni.
"This is a wakeup call for India, just like 9/11 was for the
United States. And things will change like they have in the United
States," said Neema's husband, Dilip Kulkarni.
For now, there's comfort in every phone call from family
members.
"Everybody's safe, everybody's fine. They're awfully scared and
it's been a frightening experience for them," said Neema.
