Local bar owner robbed of nearly 20K

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - A big night of football led to a big night for business at an Indianapolis bar. But, it lost the money it made. Maybe as much as 20-thousand dollars, in a hold-up. Police say it's a kind of case they don't see very often.

The Ugly Monkey is just a short walk from Lucas Oil Stadium, and on the night of the AFC Championship game, they made a lot of money. Brian Schroeder, co-owner, "It was our biggest night since I've been part of the Ugly Monkey." But, Brian Schroeder and co-owner Todd Campbell say all that money is gone, because of an intruder at Campbell's house.

Todd Campbell explains, "Well, when I first saw him, I thought that I was dead, right there." He says the man forced him to go back to the bar, and to take 15 to 20,000 dollars out of the safe.

He didn't argue because the man had a gun. "He basically just showed it to me and said he was gonna kill me unless I gave him a certain amount of money." Schroeder and Campbell say they don't think it's a coincidence.

Schroeder explains,"The guy knew where our co-owner lived. They knew he was the co-owner of the Ugly Monkey. They knew that we had just hosted this event and were very successful."

Security at the bar was minimal, and the robber wore a mask. So, they don't have much hope of identifying him.

And now Campbell and Schroeder say the future's not pretty for the Ugly Monkey. "When something like this happens, it's devastating for the bar and there is a chance that we could close."

They say they don't expect insurance to cover the loss. So, the bar plans a benefit of sorts, this Saturday. It'll share the proceeds of that night with two charities.
