FISHERS, Ind. - According to U.S. Census data, the town of Fishers has a large
enough population to become a city. And if a political action
committee has their way, it could happen next year.
Greg Purvis is the chair of the CityYes Political Action
Committee. His bi-partisan group has started a petition to convert
Fishers.
"This is not about politics, it's not about partisanship, it's
about what's right for Fishers," said Purvis. "No one else
comparable to our population has a town form of government. They
all have a mayor and a city council -- which Fishers does not."
In order to get the issue on a referendum, the committee needs
between 1,500 and 1,600 signatures. They started collecting them
six months ago. Purvis said they have at least 750.
Fishers Town Council President Scott Faultless said the matter
is up to the voters. He said the town council even plans to start
their own committee and study the issue.
"People need to be educated so that they actually know what is
best for them because that's whose decision it really is," said
Faultless.
It's an issue Mark Starnes plans to vote on. He owns All About
Me Salon in Fishers. He likes the small-town feel but is in favor
of Fishers becoming a city.
"I really feel that we need to grow and to do that. We need a
mayor and just more of a governing force to help us go forward,"
said Starnes.
Purvis said if his organization gets enough signatures, the
issue will be on the ballot in May.
