INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - Metro police have arrested a man for killing someone who was trying to help him out.
Gregory Kemp, 52, was found stabbed to death in his Indianapolis home last November. Police said Gregory met his killer while working at a homeless center downtown. According to police, Gregory and 45-year-old Samuel Fancher got in an argument, which ended when Fancher stabbed Gregory to death.
At the time, Gregory was a caseworker at Horizon House, a day center that provides various services to the homeless. Fancher was one of Gregory's clients.
Police believe Gregory was letting Fancher stay at his house. Horizon House said that's a violation of their policy but they believe Gregory was probably doing it out of the goodness of his heart.
"As far as letting him stay there, it may not have been the best of ideas. But I guess the trust was there and unfortunately it went south on him," said IMPD Lt. Jeff Duhamell.
"Knowing Gregory, we just assumed he was being too kind and pushing the boundaries that way," said Carter Wolf of the Horizon House. "If Gregory made mistakes it was from helping people too much."
Horizon House said it serves thousands of homeless people every year and, until now, never any major problems. Most clients are working to turn their life around and get back on their feet.
"It shouldn't reflect on everybody else who's trying to do right and trying to get a job and trying to get help," said Wolf.
Fancher is already in prison for a parole violation. The murder warrant will be served to him there.
