Sheriff wants tighter security in court

NOBLESVILLE, Ind. (WISH) - Later this week, Hamilton County Sheriff Doug Carter plans to meet with judges and the court administrator about security inside and outside courtrooms. The planned meeting comes after a sheriff's deputy was attacked by an inmate last Friday.

Sheriff Carter knew 31-year-old Joshua Lindsey was violent. He said Deputy Dan Trowbridge saved many lives on Friday by stopping Lindsey from taking his gun in a holding area next to Superior Court II. Carter said he believes Lindsey intended to kill Trowbridge and possibly others.

Things at the Hamilton County Government Center appeared to return to normal Monday but some people said they were uneasy. The prosecutor said some people just didn’t want to go up to the third floor where the attack took place.

Sheriff Carter said he's begun talking with judges about better protecting people who come and go at the government center.

Carter said, for now, inmates will be in handcuffs when they enter courtrooms. He's also looking at the number of correctional officers per inmate.

Trowbridge is home recovering from his injuries. Sheriff Carter has requested the DOC keep Lindsey in prison rather than the Hamilton County Jail.
