OWENSBORO, KY. (WISH/AP) - A senior basketball player for the University of Southern
Indiana has died, after collapsing during a game.
Southern Indiana spokesman Dan McDonnell said witnesses saw
21-year-old Jeron Lewis hit his head when he fell under the basked
during the game at Kentucky Wesleyan.
He was rushed to a hospital, where he passed away at about 10
p.m. Thursday.
In a news conference Friday aftenoon, Basketball coach Rodney
Wilson addressed the media saying the Lewis was a true team
player.
Preliminary autopsy results indicate Lewis may have died from a heart problem but it was unclear if thats what made him collapse during the game. Further testing is necessary and is expected to be completed in the next few weeks.
USI's president released a statement saying the university is
heartbroken.
Lewis was a high school basketball star from Fort Wayne.
He graduated from North Side High School in 2006. That year,
he led the IHSAA in rebounds.
Lewis is survived by his infant son and his fiancee.
