INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - Eleven Central Indiana businesses have failed the standards of the Indianapolis Better Business Bureau. The BBB has a code of business standards. Officials said the businesses that had their accreditation revoked broke at least one of the standards.

Bill Thomas, President of the Better Business Bureau of Indianapolis, said the BBB expects its 4,000 accredited businesses to do very basic things that all companies should do.

Dison Heating and Air on West Michigan Street is one business that no longer has the BBB's approval.

"To lose your accreditation status means that you have violated one of the standards of the Better Business Bureau," Thomas said.

Some of those standards include: build trust, advertise honestly, safeguard privacy and embody integrity.

They are common business practices Angela Elhaj, owner of Indy's Unlimited Motors, also looks for in a company.

"You're going to spend your hard earned money, you want to make sure you're going to be taken care of," said Elhaj.

That's why Elhaj was shocked when the BBB revoked their accreditation.

"It was really bothersome to us because of the fact that we worked hard in order to get the awards," said Elhaj.

The BBB gave the used car dealership an "F". The organization said Elhaj failed in 2009 to comply with a complaint and arbitration or settlement.

"Both parties have to agree. So when we didn't agree, then I guess this is what they decided they wanted to do," Elhaj said.

"I don't think it’s something that companies would want to have on their resume but it's always going to be some sort of comparison for people who are out their looking at different companies in an industry," said Thomas.

The Better Business Bureau said it usually takes about a year for a company's accreditation to be reinstated. But there's no guarantee because complaints still have to be resolved.

The businesses who had their ratings revoked are:

  • Indy’s Unlimited Motors (Indianapolis)
  • Freshkote Painting, Inc. (Indianapolis)
  • Dison Heating & Air Conditioning Company, Inc. (Indianapolis)
  • L & M Roofing & Siding (Shelbyville)
