INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - The Memorial Day weekend means holiday travelers and race fans will be on the move.
AAA expects more than 30 million Americans to travel at least 50 miles from home this holiday weekend.
However, most of those travelers were expected to be driving and not flying. AAA says the reason for this is gas prices. Gas prices are down almost 40% from last year.
AAA says the number of people planning to travel by car this weekend was up almost 3% from 2008. Airline travel is expected to fall about 1% despite a 4% decline in airfare.
24-Hour News 8 talked to a couple of ladies flying out Washington D.C. for the weekend, they say the airfare prices were fantastic.
"Actually, the rates, I thought, were fairly good. I was surprised, but I've been flying a lot of places just for family business, things like that and the rates have really not been too bad at all,” said Candy Dortor.
"The rates were great. I didn't think they were extremely low, but they were good,” said Penny Stone.
Thousands of people from across the country flooded Indianapolis this weekend for the race. AAA said hotel prices are down nationwide anywhere from 7% to 12%. A couple of race fans at the airport said they got great deals this year.
