INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - Finding a job in this economy can be tough but one Indianapolis man found a unique way to get his resume pushed to the top of the stack.
Eric Romer was unemployed for months. He decided to set up the site HireMeHeadBlade.com to help sell himself to the company HeadBlade, which produces specialty razors and other shaving products.
"I saw a job posting and didn't want to fill out a regular application," said Romer.
Romer promoted the site on Facebook and Twitter. Romer then submitted links with his application in an effort to stand out from the pack. He said response from the general public was astounding.
"People start saying on Twitter how this is cool and they re-tweet something and it organically built like that. Quickly too, in about eight hours I got the phone call," recalled Romer.
It was HeadBlade wanting to interview him. The company hired him within a few days.
"They had a good feeling about me and liked the initiative I put forth, which is really what I think caught their attention," Romer said.
Going beyond the paper application doesn't just apply to social networking sites. Romer said if you're applying to a magazine company, submit article you would write for that magazine along with the application.
"Just going into a place of business and saying 'Can I shadow you.' That goes a really long way," Romer advised.
The extra effort Romer put into his application worked even quicker than he ever thought possible. He said the experience has been surreal.
Romer is moving to Los Angeles to start his new job in a few
weeks. He's going to be doing a lot of the same things he did to
get the job: promoting the product through social networking sites.
