INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - The Indianapolis Convention and Visitor’s Association, the mayor, and members of the 2012 Super Bowl Committee all headed to Florida Thursday.
They say they want to learn all the logistics of hosting the big game, and Miami is the place to do it.
It seemed almost everyone in the airport was Super Bowl bound.
They were easy to spot. All were clad in Colts blue peering excitedly at departure times for Miami and Fort Lauderdale.
There among them was Mayor Greg Ballard and a delegation of about 20 other city leaders. But they say they're not headed to sunny Florida for fun. They're going to work, learning from Super Bowl 2010 while planning for Super Bowl 2012.
Can Indy pull it off?
"I think so. We do big events very very well. The 500 is still the largest one day sporting event in the world and we've done that well for years," said Ballard.
Their vision is grand; street closures throughout downtown to create a Super Bowl village. Canopies will crowd walkways. They plan fire pits, music, and outdoor activity in the dead of winter.
On this Super Bowl weekend, Indy is expecting inches of snow. Are city leaders prepared if that happens in 2012?
"We're in preparation for that right now - how we would double plow and salt have volunteers and subcontractors. All of that is in planning right now," said Ballard.
No snow is expected in Florida this weekend. Still, there's much to learn about the logistics of hosting one of the biggest sporting events in the world. And in two years, it's Indy's turn.
Super Bowl 2012 committee members say orchestrating a well-run Super Bowl is about the details involved in getting thousands of people where they need to go.
City leaders believe even without sun, sand and surf, the Super Bowl in Indy will be a super experience for all involved.
