INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - Sometimes getting around the house can be tough especially as you age. But, just a few items can make your home more accessible.

John Ausbrooks of Access Mobility has seen the demand for mobility products grow over the last 20 years he's been in business.

"It means being able to go outside from your car into the home and be able to access all levels of the home and all rooms," said Ausbrooks.

That includes the simple and familiar, such as canes and power wheel chairs to the more complex like a power door that can be opened with a switch for those who need assistance. Yet can still be opened the usual way for those who don't need help.

Ausbrooks said stairway lifts are gaining in popularity. They make it easy to negotiate even steep stairs.

"They just screw right to the stairs and don't touch the wall, so people like to use those," said Ausbrooks.

These devices can be added to a home without too much construction. Angie Hicks of Angie's List said if you need to go beyond these devices, choose a construction company carefully.

"The key is to find someone who specializes in those tasks. Also ask them for a free in-home evaluation so you can find out what things you are actually going to need. And then ask them for estimates to see if you need to do everything all at once," said Hicks.

John Ausbrooks said there is help available if you need it.

"If a person really needs a major modification to their home they may talk to someone like Central Indiana Council on aging or vocational rehabilitation. And they can help oversee."

Ausbrooks also said it's important to understand that not all accessibility products are covered by insurance. In fact, he said many are not. Check with your agent before you buy if you plan on filing for insurance.
