INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - A 14-year-old was shot in an attempt to steal a van early Wednesday morning, police say.
The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department was dispatched to the northwest side to investigate a teenager that had been shot at around 2:30 a.m.
The victim, a 14-year-old black boy, had suffered a gunshot wound to his upper right thigh area. He was transported to Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health.
IMPD spoke with the victim who said he was in the Stratford Apartment Complex when he and two other juveniles were attempting to steal a van, according to an IMPD report.
During their attempt to steal the vehicle, they noticed a security guard and jumped out of the van. It was at this time that an unknown black male, wearing all black, appeared from a wooded area in the 3300 block of Watergate Mall S and began shooting, IMPD reports.
The boy was struck by a bullet in his upper right thigh. The security guard did not see any of the activity, but did hear six to seven shots fired.
The injured teen fled the scene and called 911. He stated that he has been involved in gang activity for over two years.
He was placed under arrest for an outstanding warrant.
This case is currently under investigation.
