15-year-old charged with murder

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - A 15-year-old suspect in a crime spree was charged with murder and other crimes on Thursday.

The boy appeared in juvenile court Thursday morning.

In addition to the murder charge, the 15-year-old was charged with attempted murder, robbery, resisting law enforcement and escape. Prosecutors in the case requested the teen’s case be waived to adult court, but no decision has been made.

“I think he is beyond rehabilitation of the juvenile system. I think it's best that he stands trial as an adult,” said Peter Haughan Marion County Deputy Prosecutor. 

The teen’s attorney asked the court for a psychological evaluation for the teen.

“Nobody goes out and does something like this out of the blue,” said Kenneth Riggins, the teen’s attorney.  “We need a full psychological evaluation.”

At the proceedings, the teenager spoke softly but didn’t say much. He hugged his dad, who cried at some points.

Another teenager, 17-year-old Sirquain Burr, was charged with murder in adult court on Tuesday in connection to the same crime spree.

24-Hour News 8 does not identify juvenile suspects unless they’re charged as adults.

Marion County Judge Marilyn Moores could not talk about the specifics of this case. However, she gave some insight on what factors a judge will review in an adult waiver hearing.

Some of those factors include teen remorse, psychological evaluation, and what type of treatment he or she would receive in adult system as opposed to juvenile.

“Those kinds of things show I’m not beyond rehab,” said Moores.
