Police said a 16-year-old Arlington High School student was shot in the back on the way home from school Tuesday. The shooting took place in the 4000 block of Campbell Avenue on the city’s northeast side.
According to police, seven Arlington students were walking home from school when a group of five former students approached them near 42nd Street. Soon after, police said, an argument broke out.
When one of the former students pulled a gun, the Arlington students scattered. At least two ran students down Campbell Avenue. As they were being chased, the gunman fired and hit the 16-year-old in the lower back.
The victim and a friend continued running and eventually knocked on the door of a home. They asked the homeowners to call 911.
“I saw two young men standing in the yard. One was holding the other up. He was bleeding in the back. He wanted the police to hurry up and get here,” said homeowner Ian Owens.
Paramedics treated the teen and transported him to Wishard Hospital where he is listed in "satisfactory condition."
Neighbors said the situation could have been much worse had the shooting taken place just an hour later.
“Had it been a little later the children would have gotten off the school bus on the corner. We have two buses drop off here. The children would have been playing. We have a neighborhood filled with children,” said neighbor Tanya Northington.
Police said the victim was not able to identify the shooter. He said the gun was being passed back and forth.
