INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - It took less than two hours for jurors to find two former
narcotics detectives guilty of drug possession and conspiracy to
distribute. Both were found not guilty of firearm charges.
Prosecutors alleged both Robert Long and Jason Edwards
systematically shook down drug dealers for the prospect of "easy
riches." They even released an FBI undercover surveillance tape.
According to prosecutors, the tape shows the officers along
with ex-patrolman Jason Davis illegally searching a house for drugs
and cash. Prosecutors said they later emerged from the house with
five pounds of marijuana and $18,000 in cash. They also said it's
just one of numerous incidents where the men stopped drug dealers
and parcels for drugs and hundreds of thousands of dollars.
"Any time you accuse law enforcement officers of a crime, the
evidence must be excellent and the video in this case is some of
the best," said the prosecutor.
Defense attorneys argued that prosecutors haven't
sufficiently proven their case.
Patrolman James Davis already pled guilty and faces 10 to 15
years behind bars. Long faces up to 25 years in jail and Edward
face up to 10 years in jail.
A health care battle is heating up in Washington and here in Indianapolis.
