INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - An Indianapolis man walking his dog was robbed, shot and left for dead. Police said the robbers held up Gabriel Jordan, 23, late Sunday night on the east side of Indianapolis.

Jordan is in critical condition at Wishard Hospital. His father said Jordan loved walking his rescued pit bull in his east side neighborhood. Officers said Jordan tried fighting them off and ran away on Clyde Avenue when someone shot him in the back.

"Habitually, he had a late night walk with the dog," said Mike Jordan.

Police said two men confronted Jordan in the 5000 block of English Avenue and stole his wallet. Officers said Jordan tried fighting them off and ran away on Clyde Avenue when someone shot him in the back.

Mike talked about his son's frightening ordeal, even sharing the news that his son will never walk again.

"The bullet severed his spinal cord when it entered his body and he is paralyzed from the waist down and will be forever," Jordan said. "Nobody deserves that, nobody does."

Neighbors heard Gabriel Jordan screaming for help and found him lying on the ground. Neighbor Billy Roberts said he even took the shirt off his back to clog up the bullet hole in an attempt to save Gabriel's life

"I rolled him over onto his stomach and looked on his back, pulled up his (shirt) and I seen there's one on his back. So, I took my T-shirt off and put the pressure on it just to stop the bleeding," Roberts said.

Another neighbor, Lawrence Collyear, recalled Gabriel's cries for help.

"The guy was laying right there hollering 'Help! They are trying to kill me'," Collyear said.

Gabriel Jordan is married and has a seven-month-old son.

Anyone with information about the person who shot him is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 262-TIPS.
