Prescription pills were stolen from a Bartholomew County woman's home by a man who claimed he was taking a survey, according to authorities.

The man came to the 83-year-old woman's door on South Road 450E at 2 p.m. Thursday saying he was taking a survey about doctors, but the woman said she didn't want to take part in the survey.

The man asked if he could use the woman's bathroom, which she allowed, and when he came out of the bathroom he sat down at her kitchen table and began writing on a notepad.

She told him to leave and he said he needed to write down some quick notes and then asked for a glass of water. He also questioned her about whether she lived alone.

The man left abruptly, and the woman realized after he was gone that he had taken a bottle of prescription pain relievers from her kitchen table.

The woman gave a limited description of the suspect, saying only he was in his mid 20s.

Bartholomew County Sheriff Mark Gorbett encouraged residents to never let a stranger in their home, even if they ask for simple things like the restroom or water.

He asked anyone who encounters a suspicious person or activities to call authorities.

Bartholomew County dispatch: 379-1689.
