A small, simple white house in the country turned into the scene of a shooting, hostage situation, and police standoff on Thursday.
According to police, it all started when a man came to the home he had once shared with his estranged wife.
Sgt. Joe Watts of Indiana State Police said, "Our preliminary investigation shows that his estranged wife had another man at home. He arrived at this house this morning, saw the other man at the residence, and became upset and shot the man multiple times, allegedly."
Police said the man, 34-year-old Frank Ford of Terre Haute, took off from the house on foot and ended up a half mile away at a neighbor's house. That neighbor called 911.
As Ford went to the hospital, police say the estranged husband, 25-year-old Matthew Aubrey continued to hold his wife hostage for two more hours. He let her go, but continued to keep police at bay.
Nearly two hours later, hostage negotiators from the Clay County Sheriff's Department and Indiana State Police convinced Aubrey to come out of the house.
"The first thing we want to do is make contact and develop a rapport," said Lt. Chris Wilson of Indiana State Police. "And by the time that we in State Police had gotten here, the county sheriff's department negotiator had already done that."
Aubrey's estranged wife, Jayme, spent the afternoon telling investigators more about what happened.
Frank Ford is in fair condition at Wishard Hospital. Police said he is expected to survive.
Matthew Aubrey faces three preliminary felony charges, including battery with a deadly weapon. He's being held in the Clay County Jail.
