Ind. troopers collect a ton of unwanted Rx drugs

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Indiana State Police says their posts around the state collected more than a ton of unwanted prescription drugs during a drug take-back initiative.

They say the 14 state police districts collected nearly 2,200 pounds of drugs during the event Saturday. Nearly a quarter of the total, 700 pounds, was collected in the Fort Wayne district alone. The Jasper district collected more than 500 pounds of drugs.

It was the fifth nationwide "Prescription Drug Take Back" initiative sponsored by the Drug Enforcement Administration. The initiative seeks to prevent prescription drug abuse and theft.

Collection sites were set up nationwide for expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs to be turned in for destruction.

State police set up collection sites at every post except the Toll Road post.
