INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - Officers are continuing to investigate a shooting inside Lafayette Square Mall Friday night.

IMPD's mobile van sits outside Lafayette Square, and there are extra officers patroling the parking lot and adjacent areas too. The stepped-up police presence follows a shooting Friday night inside the mall, near the food court.

Sgt. Paul Thompson, "There was an encounter between of at least two individuals and a group of three other individuals, they spoke briefly.  A disagreement came about at which time, allegedly one of the individuals pulled a knife, and may have threatened another man who had a gun."

Fortunately, no one was injured, but officers found evidence where the bullet hit two windows. 19-year-old Jim Johnson fired the shot. He was the one who called authorities to report the incident.   Police checked, and John does have a permit to carry a weapon.

Shoppers Saturday were surprised to learn of the incident. Sherice Davenport says " No, I would not expect anybody to have a gun inside of a mall. I dont expect that."

Terri Reades was surprised as well, "You wouldn't think that it would be here, a shooting inside the mall.  I've heard of it outside the mall because I live around here, not inside the mall - it does worry you"

Sherice Davenport, "Anytime after 6 o'clock, when it gets dark, I wouldnt be shopping, not unless I had my family with me."

Investigators hope to have paperwork to present to the prosecutor's office on Monday.  Prosecutors will determine whether or not to pursue charges against Johnson for firing the weapon inside the mall.

Police are still looking into a "time" issue at the scene of Friday night's shooting.  Investigators believe police were called 30 minutes after the shooting occurred.  Officers are still determining whether or not that is true.
