ROCKPORT, Ind. (AP) - The mother of an escaped inmate who was captured at her southern Indiana home says he broke out of the Indiana State Prison after he was diagnosed with inoperable cancer.
Geraldine Lynch, 69, told The Associated Press that her son Lance Battreal intended to surrender to authorities after walking from the prison in Michigan City about 250 miles away to visit her in Rockport. She said her son has thyroid cancer that recently returned after being in remission.
Department of Correction spokesman Doug Garrison said the agency
has no record that Battreal had ever been diagnosed or treated for
cancer.
Authorities arrested the 45-year-old convicted rapist about 1 a.m. Tuesday in the Ohio River town.
Battreal along with convicted murderers 48-year-old Charles Smith and 46-year-old Mark Booher escaped July 12.
Smith was captured the following day in nearby Grand Beach, Mich., while officials say Booher remains at large.
