Some of the people who live in a small Howard County town are taking steps to feel safer.
And they hope investigators can catch whoever savagely attacked a 26-year-old mother of three young children in their neighborhood.
Someone beat Jamie Harney until she was unconscious and covered in blood.
Her three children found her that way in the family's Greentown home Friday morning.
Harney's husband was out of town, so the children ran to the home of a neighbor, who called 911. So far, police have not made any arrests. ( To read more click here )
The owner of a gun store in Kokomo said some of Harney's neighbors have come into his store the last few days.
"We've had some that get pepper spray and we've had some that get little small handguns and stuff like that," said Roby Ahnert, owner of Roby's Bullseye Outdoors.
People are on edge in a neighborhood in which they used to take safety for granted.
"Half the time I leave my car unlocked, which I don't do any more," said Brent Cavazos.
He lives just doors away from the Harney family.
He told 24-Hour News 8 that families move to Greentown because the schools are so good.
Now, he's thinking more than ever about how to protect his family.
"My wife is pretty upset about it," Cavazos said. "Most of the people around here are. I am, too. As soon as I heard about it, like any husband or father, you want to track them down. It's really unsettling."
Jamie Harney is still in critical condition at Methodist Hospital.
The Howard County Sheriff's Department is still investigating, and would like to hear from anyone with information on the case.
