INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - Police said a boy was injured after a suspect tried to get away with a stolen vehicle and crashed it at 10th and Sherman on the east side. It happened just after 8 p.m. Tuesday night.

Police said an officer spotted a 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee driving erratically on Southeastern Avenue near Sherman Drive. When the officer attempted to stop it, police said the Jeep fled north on Sherman Drive.

A police statement says the pursuing officer could not keep up with the Jeep and the officer lost sight of the vehicle near Michigan Street. Police said a short time later, the Jeep struck a 2003 Ford SUV that was westbound on 10th Street at Sherman Drive.

Police said five people were in the Ford SUV, including an eight-year-old boy. The boy was transported to Riley Hospital with rib pain. He was the only person in the Ford that was hurt.

The Jeep had been warming up and unlocked in the driveway of 3360 Summer Breeze Lane when it was taken around 8 p.m., police said.

A man in dark clothing with a black backpack fled from the Jeep on foot, police said. Officers are currently searching the nearby neighborhood.
