INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - Metro Police say an officer fatally shot a suspect after a chase and scuffle on the east side Tuesday night.

Investigators say the officer was attempting to make a traffic stop near the intersection of 30th Street and Richardt Avenue around 7:30 p.m. However, they say the driver wouldn't stop and continued to drive his 1994 Mercury Marquis into a nearby neighborhood.
The officer said about one minute into the chase, the suspect rammed his car into the officer’s squad car.

The car chase ended a couple of minutes later in a field at the dead end of Wellington Avenue just north of 33rd Street. Police say that's when the driver, 35-year-old Warren Collins, took off running. But the officer followed.

Police say at one point Collins assaulted the officer, knocking him to the ground and perhaps knocking him unconscious. The officer recovered and shot Collins.

Collins was taken to Wishard Hospital in critical condition and later died.

The 24-year-old officer, a two-year veteran of the department, was taken to Methodist Hospital in fair condition.

Police say they know Collins well, adding that he has an extensive criminal record that includes reckless homicide. Collins spent four years behind bars. He was also convicted of driving while suspended, carrying a handgun without a license, possession of marijuana, failure to stop at an accident involving death and resisting law enforcement.

Police say the suspect was driving without a license and facing a felony charge if caught driving.
