Indiana State Police are investigating a police shooting. It happened near State Road 67 and County Road 150 South in Madison County Saturday night.

There is considerable damage to 29-year-old Shain Arnold's gray Chevy Astro van after investigators say he was involved in a hit and run. The vehicle is surrounded by police tape, now evidence at the Indiana State Police post in Pendleton.

The vehicle has major front-end damage and you can even see a bullet hole on the side of the van.

Just after nine o'clock Saturday night Indiana State Police say Arnold, of Anderson, left the scene of a crash.

Major Brain Bell with the Madison County Sheriff's Department spotted Arnold's van and tried to stop him.

"There was a short pursuit of three to four minutes, he refused to stop," Indiana State Police Sgt. Mike Burns explained.

When Arnold did stop, investigators say he got out of the van and pulled out a weapon.

Investigators say Major Bell ordered Arnold several times to drop the weapon and he refused.

"Officer Bell at that point fired a shot which struck the suspect," Sgt. Burns said.

Investigators say Major Bell approached the Arnold to handcuff him and the two struggled.

"Officer Bell backed off and fired a second round at the suspect," said Sgt. Burns

That's when investigators say Major Bell realized Arnold's weapon was not a handgun.

"It did appear to be, from my knowledge early in the investigation, type of a handgun with a pistol grip with an automatic release for a switch blade type of knife," Sgt. Burns said.

Paramedics took Arnold to the St. Johns Hospital in Anderson. He is currently at the Madison County Detention Center facing numerous charges, including drunk driving.

Major Bell has been placed on administrative duty pending the outcome of the investigation.

The case will be handed over to the Madison County Prosecutor.
