MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. (WSBT/AP) - WSBT in South Bend reports that police have surrounded a man in a heavily wooded area near South Shore train tracks and a park that they believe is an inmate who escaped Sunday from the Indiana State Prison.
A South Bend Tribune photographer at the scene reports that a massive manhunt involving several law enforcement agencies, including Indiana State Police, is concentrating along Springland Avenue near Karwick Nature Park and a radio station. The man is believed to be 45-year-old Lance Battreal.
The convicted rapist escaped Sunday from the prison along with 46-year-old Mark Booher and 49-year-old Charles Smith, both of whom are convicted murderers.
Smith was captured Monday near Grand Beach, Mich. Booher and Battreal remain at large.
Rider said the manhunt was sparked when a woman driving by the
wooded area saw a man without a shirt look out from the woods then
duck back in. She thought it was suspicious, so she contacted
authorities.
