INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - Metro detectives are still looking for three people they say tried to rob a man early Tuesday morning.
Just before 7:00 a.m., officers, emergency crews and homicide detectives responded to the 4600 block of East 21st Street.
They found the homeowner, Miguel Duarte, shot in the face. But he was able to tell officers the woman shot dead in his home was one of four attackers.
He told police two men and two women knocked on his door then tried to rob him.
A struggle started outside the home, but moved inside the home.
Duarte's wife and two boys were inside at the time.
Police said one of the female suspects held Duarte's wife, Sandra, at gunpoint. And Miguel was shot while struggling with that suspect. Police said Miguel got the gun away from the suspect and fatally shot her.
Police said it's a Hispanic female in her 20s.
The three other suspects took off in the van.
Police have since questioned Sandra in an attempt to determine what happened.
24-Hour News 8 spoke with Sandra's mother, Gloria Castro who was frightened when police asked that she pick up her daughter. Gloria told 24-Hour News 8 she really doesn't know what happened or why anyone would have tried to rob her son-in-law.
The family has gathered at Wishard Hospital where Duarte listed in serious condition.
Police said it appears it was an attempted armed robbery. And they say it does not appear to be drug related.
Police have not identified the female suspect they found dead in the home. They are still looking for two men and a woman who fled the home.
A school bus crashed into a house in Carmel Wednesday morning.
