INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - Metro police have made an arrest in the stabbing death of an Indianapolis man.
Police believe Bernard Hawkins, 42, stabbed 53-year-old Charles Lewis multiple times. His body was found behind a gas station in the 1200 block of South East Street.
Police were called to the scene just before 9 p.m. Lewis was pronounced dead at the scene.
The police report describing the investigation indicates the arrest came after at least one important anonymous tip and interviews with several other people.
Officers say a woman called to say she heard Buddy (Bernard Hawkins) tell his girlfriend he had just stabbed the guy and she needed to wash his clothes and hide some rings.
Another witness claims Hawkins and Lewis got into a fight that led to the stabbing.
The report also describes a futile attempt by the victim to save his life.
Officers believe Lewis walked into the Speedway gas station to get napkins to try to treat his own wounds.
He did not make it far; he died sitting down on a curb behind the station.
The autopsy determined he died of a stab wound that pierced his heart.
