Attorney on explosion arrests: Don’t rush to judgment

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - Randall Cable said he learned about the arrest of his clients Friday the same way everyone else did – through the media.

“I would've thought common courtesy for the prosecutor's office to let me know that they had been arrested,” said Cable.

The Marion County prosecutor announced Friday morning that charges have been filed in connection with the fatal Richmond Hill explosion Nov. 10.

Monserrate Shirley, 47, owner of the home where the explosion occurred, her boyfriend, Mark Leonard, 43, and his brother, Bob Leonard, 54, were arrested Friday. Jail records show all three of them have each been charged with two counts of murder, along with dozens of charges of arson.

Cable represents Shirley and Mark Leonard. When asked whether they maintain their innocence, Cable said they always have.

“It appears – and I've not seen all the paperwork – it appears police started out with a premise in that the people at that house were responsible and whether they looked at anyone else, I don't know,” he said.

Cable said it’s important not to rush to judgment.

"I've been practicing for 38 years and I've seen a lot of cases over the years that looked like one thing and it changed the case. And so that's what the courtroom is for.”

All three have initial court appearances set at 10 a.m. Monday.
