BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (WISH) - New details are surfacing about the arrest of an Indiana doctor accused of bilking insurance companies out of millions of dollars.

Monday, the US Attorney’s Office alleged the doctor had patients undergo invasive procedures and surgeries they didn’t need to get the drugs. Then he would allegedly bill insurance companies, making money.

"In order to get them to go through with those procedures, the government is alleging in its indictment he made these other drugs like Percocet as a condition. In other words, if you go through this awful procedure, and I can bill for it, then I'm going to give you these drugs,” said Tim Morrison of the US Attorneys Office.

24-Hour News 8 confirmed last week Dr. Kamal Tiwari was indicted on charges of wrongful death and fraud.

Dr. Tiwari prescribed drugs to one patent with a history of drug abuse. Her death, at the age of 27, was linked to that drug usage.

This isn't the first time Tiwari, who has offices in Bloomington and Terre Haute, has been in trouble.

There is a case pending from two years ago that he treated more than 1,800 patients and re-used syringes.

Tiwari did not return calls for comment.
