Boy Scouts robbed of trailer and gear

GREENWOOD, Ind. (WISH) - Help is pouring in for some Greenwood Boy Scouts after someone stole their camping gear and the trailer that held it all.

Wednesday, Mike Hilton with Indoor Shooting Range on Post Road, donated a truck full of sleeping mats and tents to Troop 621. He said his business was recently a victim of theft and he wanted to help the scouts get back on track.

The scouts had worked for five years to raise enough money for the trailer, which they finally were able to buy, pack full of camping gear, and then park at the Greenwood American Legion parking lot.

Last week, they discovered it had been stolen.

As word spread about what happened, the scouts said they heard from people across the area wanting to help.     

"It gives you a little more hope in humanity now,” said Andrew Castellano. “People don't just think about themselves. I don't remember any of us asking for donations at all. They just did it by themselves.”

"What I didn’t expect was the outpouring by the community almost immediately. From just ‘we are sorry,’ to strangers from Broad Ripple saying 'we are going to donate stuff to get you back on your feet,” said assistant scoutmaster Jim Castellano.           

The scouts will still be able to go on their camping trip in January.

They said they’re still trying to determine whether insurance will cover the cost of the loss.
